How do I read a weather radar map?
Radar images use colour scales to show rainfall intensity. Light blue or green indicates light drizzle, while yellow, orange and red signal moderate to heavy rain. Purple often marks very heavy rain or hail. The time stamp on each image tells you when the scan was taken, and looping several frames shows the direction and speed of weather systems.
When is radar most useful for travel planning?
For coastal trips, radar is invaluable during the wet season (November to April in northern Australia) and through winter fronts in the south. Check the radar before heading to the beach or starting a drive, especially if severe weather warnings are current. It helps you decide whether to delay outdoor plans or pack wet-weather gear.
What does “no radar available” mean?
It usually means the radar site is offline for maintenance, or you are outside the coverage area. Coastal and inland gaps exist, especially in remote regions. Try a nearby radar or check satellite imagery instead.
Can radar predict hail or tornadoes?
Doppler radar can detect rotation in storms (mesocyclones) that may produce tornadoes, and dual-polarisation radar identifies hail by its shape. However, radar is a nowcasting tool, not a long-range predictor.
Is radar data free to access?
Yes, the Bureau of Meteorology provides free radar imagery on its website and app. Third-party sites like Weatherzone also offer radar loops and overlays for public use.
