California’s climate spans Mediterranean coasts, desert heat and alpine snow, so the best time to visit depends on your destination. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer the most comfortable conditions statewide. For current conditions, refer to the live forecast above.

When is the best time to visit California?

For coastal cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles, September and October deliver warm days with less fog. Inland areas and national parks such as Yosemite are best visited in April–May or September–October to avoid summer heat and winter snow. Australian winter holidays (July) work well on the coast but can be uncomfortably hot inland. If you’re after beach weather, avoid December–February in northern California, though southern beaches remain mild year-round.

What should I pack for California?

Layers are essential. A light jacket for coastal evenings and fog, sunscreen and a hat for strong sun, and warm clothing for mountain regions like Lake Tahoe. In summer include a swimsuit; in winter bring a waterproof jacket for rain in the north. Check the Australia weather hub for comparison, or see the San Diego Weather page for a similar coastal climate.
